America has long been known as “the land of opportunity.” It has also been recognized as a “melting pot” of cultures that reflects itself as a patchwork society. For generations, immigrants from all over the globe have traveled to American shores in hopes of a better life and potential success. Multitudes still regard it as the nation of boundless possibilities. With that in mind, here are two successful entrepreneurs who have helped shape America.

Andrew Carnegie
Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) was one of the most famed and well-regarded American entrepreneur and Industrialists in history. Originally immigrating from Scotland and born into the working class, the Carnegie clan settled in Pennsylvania, where they aspired to better circumstances. Carnegie would later become one of the first “robber barons” or captains of industry, form Carnegie Steel Company, and establish himself as a leading philanthropist.

Not only was the business magnate largely responsible for the vast expansion of the steel industry during the 19th Century, but Carnegie also became one of the first prolific angel investors and philanthropists in U.S. history. He invested in a variety of sectors including messenger services, car companies, land that contained oil reserves, and many other opportunities. At the time of his death, Carnegie had an estimated fortune of $350 million, which translates to several billions of dollars in today’s money.

Bill Gates
Bill Gates has become one of the most well-known and respected American entrepreneurs of all time. As of 2019, he is also the second-richest person in the world with a fortune of nearly $100 billion. The business magnate was born and raised in Seattle, WA, and began his fascination with technology and PCs as a youngster. Gates’ aptitude and potential landed him a spot in the Ivy League at Harvard University; however, he opted to drop out and start Microsoft instead.

Since its inception, Microsoft has continued to push the envelope and emerge as one of the world’s premier tech companies. While Gates still retains his spot on the board of Microsoft, which is currently valued at over a trillion dollars, he has turned his personal focus onto his philanthropic pursuits, which are spearheaded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. As proof of their commitment of giving back, the Gates have signed The Giving Pledge, which is a commitment by the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to donate the majority of their fortunes to charity as well as other philanthropic pursuits.

This post provides a sampling of two maverick visionaries, both of whom came from humble beginnings and matriculated into successful entrepreneurs, who have left indelible marks on society and helped shape America.
